At Cheadle Manor, the Visiting With Purpose workshop did more than bring people together, it created a space where stories were shared, silence was broken, and support was built. Led by John Ramsay, whose openness about his own journey invited others to do the same, the session sparked a wave of connection among families, staff, and residents.
Following the Visiting With Purpose workshop at Cheadle Manor, we spoke with Cathryn Fairhurst, Managing Director of Operations at Lovett Care & New Care, to reflect on the impact of the session and the ripple effect it’s had across the home.
“Everything we do is evidence-based. It improves well-being for residents, visitors, and staff alike.”
Cathryn was a registered nurse with over 40 years in health and social care, and she now oversees all aspects of care delivery, governance, and well-being across the homes. She shared how the workshop not only met but exceeded her expectations.
“I had high expectations because I’ve worked with John before and knew the ethos aligned with ours. But the session went beyond that, it created real momentum.”
The workshop, led by Social-Ability founder John Ramsay, sparked meaningful conversations among residents, families, and staff and what began as a structured session evolved into something more organic and powerful…
“The discussion continued long after John had left. People who were once just on nodding terms became friends. The attendees all now know each other’s names, stories, and challenges.”
This sense of connection has already led to new initiatives like coffee mornings and peer support groups, with families and staff working together to support one another, as well as being ready to bring new relatives along the journey.
Cathryn emphasised the importance of well-being- not just for residents, but for everyone involved, and one of the most profound outcomes was the way the workshop helped break the silence around dementia. By creating a safe space for vulnerability, it allowed people to share their lived experiences and feel less alone.
“It’s that feeling ‘I’m not alone.’ Everyone’s journey is individual, but knowing others are walking alongside you is incredibly powerful.”
John’s facilitation was praised for being inclusive, tactful, and deeply empathetic. His own experiences helped foster an environment where honesty and openness could flourish.
“The response was overwhelming. The passion and willingness to share personal stories made a massive difference.”
Cathryn’s only feedback? Do more of it.
“It was life-changing for those who participated. Whether it’s staff-led or family-led, we can’t wait to keep the momentum going.”
As the workshop continues to inspire new connections and conversations, it’s clear that Visiting With Purpose is more than a one-off event, it’s a catalyst for change, compassion, and community.
